Environmental Justice

Environmental Justice (EJ) is an interdisciplinary minor that focuses on the differential exposures to environmental burdens and differential access to environmental benefits experienced by diverse human and non-human groups. The minor allows students to explore the social, cultural, economic, and environmental sources of this differential exposure or access. Students minoring in EJ will explore the history of environmental injustice and the ways in which impacted communities adapt to, respond to, and/or resist these injustices. EJ minors also will investigate ways to work toward a more environmentally just society. A minor in EJ consists of 28 credits. Required courses include:
Foundation (all required): ENVS-100 and 120 or 364
Environmental Justice Focused (select 2): PSJ-200, ENVS/SOC-220, ENVS/RELS-261, or ENVS-428
Human Circumstances in the Env (select 1): ENVS-242, 243, 332, 338, 362, ENVS/HIST-254, 356
Other recommended courses include: ECON/GWSS-210, ENVS-244, 450W or 452W or 454W, SOC-255, or ENVS/PSYCH-260, in addition to those courses not already selected from within the minor categories.
Students who plan to continue on within the field of EJ after graduation are advised to talk with the EJ coordinator to determine the specific courses, and/or additional ones, that may be recommended for continuing on in a particular aspect of this field. EJ minors are also recommended to seek out and complete an XLP that provides additional experience and exposure to some aspect of environmental justice work.
For Environment and Sustainability (ENVS) majors wishing to minor in EJ, no more than 12 credits can be counted toward both their EJ minor and their major.
Special topics and other new courses may count towards the EJ minor with permission of the EJ coordinator. Similarly, internships or courses taken during a study abroad or off campus program may also count towards the EJ minor with approval from the EJ coordinator.
